1959 Loewe Opta 05700 Fonovox Export Model "Kobold"
Bakelite as bakelite should be
In a Nutshell
Beautiful little German AM/FM bakelite radio from 1959
Introduction:
The owner of the Privates Loewe Opta Radio Museum in Bocket, Germany (ref.1), Hans Stellmacher, told me that the leading "0" in the model number 05700 of this radio is significant, since there is also a model 5700, that belongs to a list of similar Loewe Kobold radios for the domestic market. Both are otherwise undocumented. The radio has been made in 1959 by Loewe Opta's "Special" Division in Düsseldorf Germany for its US distributor Videola-Erie Corp. (75 Front Street, Brooklyn 1, N. Y.), who imported LO radios under the name Fonovox. Like the Stromberg Carlson 872H for sale it is made from highly reflective bakelite. As a typical German set it is equipped with VALVO tubes, six of them. Its price in the first year of sale was 165 Deutsche Mark, which had about the same buying power as today's US$. Hans Stellmacher sent me the schematics (pict.25), which shows only little differences to the documented domestic models. Specifically it also uses a "Spartransformator" (autotransformer), feeding only the heater strings of the tubes. The speaker of the radio has been made by DEW (Deutsche Edelstahl Werke) Magnetfabrik Dortmund, very near Düsseldorf, the preferred speaker factory for almost all German radio makers.
About my Radio:
The radio has a date stamp of 26. Jan. 1959. It plays fine on both AM and FM (click on thumbnail 16). This is a lovely little high-quality radio and a nice Christmas present. Please
e-mail me (Kris) for any questions, ich spreche Deutsch, je parle Français.
For the detectives only:
I could not find out, what R.R.L. in the serial number plate stands for (pict.20)?
